The 1883 Season 1 Finale left Elsa for dead. A “Death Scene” shows Elsa's body appearing lifeless. Elsa’s narration then describes her experience of death and visions of heaven. This heartbreaking scene had 1883 fans in tears. However, Elsa could still be alive after the Finale. She can also survive.
The "Death Scene" in the Finale was a “Near Death Experience” There is nothing in the 1883 season Finale that conclusively shows Elsa having died. Her body wasn't buried, her head wasn't blown off, she wasn't shot in the heart... She had an infection that they didn't think could be treated. It is not uncommon for critically ill patients to appear lifeless and ultimately survive. There are thousands of documented cases of patients with life threatening diseases, who appear lifeless and survive to describe after life experiences. The Near-Death Experience Research Foundation maintains a database of 4900 “Near Death Experience” cases. There are numerous historical accounts of people who were alive after conclusively determined to be dead. The following article describes such stories: "True tales of people coming back to life during funerals and in mortuaries after being declared dead"| The Independent. Just because she looked lifeless does not mean she was dead. Viewers simply assumed she was dead. Elsa’s Survival is a Better Story of The Dutton Family’s Paradise Montana Origins and John Dutton's Refusal to Sell the Yellowstone Ranch Viewers conclude that Elsa’s death explains the Dutton's Paradise, Montana origins. That the Dutton family abandoned plans for Oregon and settled at the Yellowstone Ranch location because Elsa was buried there. And that it also explains why John Dutton refuses to sell the Yellowstone Ranch for a half a billion dollars. Elsa's survival is an alternate more credible and dramatically gratifying explanation. The Dutton Family could have considered it a sacred place. Elsa’s having survived there, from what they had considered a fatal injury, would have attached a spiritual significance of biblical proportions to the Yellowstone Ranch location. You can relocate graves, especially for a half billion dollars. You cannot relocate "holy ground". The Elsa Dutton character is largely responsible for the success of 1883. Paramount could realistically portray Elsa's survival in the next 1883 season or a new Spin-off Series. Elsa's Medical Condition And How She Can Survive Elsa had been shot with an arrow that punctured her liver. The arrow had caused both a wound, and a severe infection which resulted in an intense life-threatening fever. Elsa received treatment for the wound. Margaret, a former army nurse, had removed the arrow, and cauterized and bandaged the wound. The crow Indians submerged Elsa’s body in a cold-water creek. Elsa was able to ride a horse for long distances. This is evidence that the wound itself was healing. Elsa Has Sepsis-Which is Successfully Treated with Antibiotics The infection is what had everyone convinced of Elsa’s immanent death. They all knew of men who had suffered gunshot wounds in battle. In their experiences, infectous wounds resulting in fever were always fatal. The army surgeon's prognosis was that if Elsa survived the wound, the “Sepsis” in her would kill her. Sepsis, a severe life-threatening blood disorder, is successfully treated with antibiotics, which were not discovered until 1928. In modern times it is not fatal. In 1883 conventional medicine had no treatment for Sepsis. Modern Medical Science and Historical Precedent Prove Peyote Could Have Cured Elsa Dr. Stacy B. Schaefer, Professor Emerita in the Department of Anthropology, California State University, Chico, describes the medicinal use of Peyote by the Comanche in the following article: Peyote: Plant Medicine for the Body, Mind and Soul by Chacruna.net. She states that "Medical research over the decades overwhelmingly points to the therapeutic value of peyote, something that indigenous people have known for years. Alkaloids in Peyote have analgesic and antibiotic properties beneficial to healing the human body." Dr. Schaefer also sites a paper documenting a 1960 clinical study that concluded that an extract of peyote was found to have antibiotic properties against several penicillin resistant bacteria. Peyote is an effective antibiotic. The real life Commanche Chief Quanah Parker was cured of an identical medical condition by Peyote In 1885:
Quanah Parker was gored by a bull and suffered a severe blood disease resulting in a life-threatening fever. He was treated with peyote tea. He recovered and lived until 1911. The real life story appears in the article Commanche chief came to Big Bend seeking Peyote. (Click on link to view-story appears in third Paragraph from the bottom). The Chief was gored by the filthy horn of a bull, Elsa was shot by a “filthy arrow”. Elsa had Sepsis, a severe blood disease. The chief had a severe blood disease, which was probably sepsis. They both had severe fevers. In Episode 8 of 1883, when Sam is asked by James where Elsa will live he says "My Land is with Quanah Parker". Elsa's Life could have been saved by Peyote in 1883 just as the real life Commanche Chief Quanah Parker’s life was in 1885. Sam The Commanche Warrior Could Save Elsa Sam was the one person who could save Elsa. He had a treatment for sepsis. He would have known that Peyote could cure Elsa. News of the Lakota massacre would have spread throughout the Indian tribes of the plains very quickly. Sam would have been able to determine Elsa's specific location by talking to the Lakota and Crow Indians. A warrior on horseback can travel much faster than a wagon train. Sam would have known she needed help, had the antibiotic to cure her and been able to get there in time to save Elsa. Short Story Shows how Elsa will Be Saved By Sam The 1883 Season 2 Opening Scene "Elsa is Alive and Can Survive" is a short story portraying events that could lead to Elsa’s survival. This scene includes a depiction of the effects of Elsa’s ordeal on James Dutton’s mental state, Peyote, Comanche Christianity, and the Intense Love that Sam had for Elsa. It uses imagery and music to represent Elsa's near-death experience and the psychedelic effects of Peyote. It is going to be submitted to Paramount Studios along with a Petion to Save Elsa Dutton. A link to the Petition is on the homepage of the website. Please read this story you will love it. Any comments or criticisms are welcomed. Please sign the Petition To Save Elsa. In the very near future a review/interpretation of the opening scene story will be posted to the Elsa's Blog on the site. An examination of “Elsa’s Pre-1883 Life” will also be on the site. This is an article which forensically examines evidence from 1883 Season 1 and determines Elsa’s Hometown, the actual real-life School she would have attended, James Dutton's Pre/post-Civil War professions, the Dutton Family's Socio-Economic status, and the reason they left and became western pioneers.
